Editorial Standards
The standards behind every destination guide, comparison and article on Surf and Dive.
Sources and verification
We ground factual claims in first-party tourism boards, reputable surf, dive and freediving organisations and established travel sources. Blog posts that rely on a specific official source carry source notes. High-risk claims (access, regulations, marine conditions and safety) are written cautiously and marked for verification before travel.
Opinion and fact
We separate editorial opinion from objective information. Phrases such as “our verdict”, “we would prioritise” and “generally favours” signal editorial judgement. Descriptions of seasons use qualified language (generally, typically, often, depending on region) because conditions vary.
Scoring methodology
Each destination receives five editorial positioning scores from 1 to 10: surf, diving, freediving, luxury and scenery. They reflect the overall quality and range of experiences available to a traveller with appropriate ability, in the right season, with a good operator. They are comparison aids, not scientific rankings, and not a promise about any particular day, site or property.
What we never publish
- Fabricated first-hand experiences, reviews, testimonials or expert quotes.
- Invented prices, availability, flight times, awards, credentials or partnerships.
- Guarantees of waves, visibility, weather or wildlife encounters.
- Advice that encourages unsafe behaviour, including solo freediving, breath-hold competition, entering conditions beyond your ability, or touching coral and wildlife.
- Photography that misrepresents a real place. Destination imagery must be authentic and licensed; we never use AI-generated images to depict real resorts, reefs, waves or wildlife encounters.
Photography
Where photography has not yet been commissioned or licensed, our pages show clearly labelled image slots rather than generic stock imagery. Alt text always describes the actual photograph.
Updates and corrections
Blog posts show published and updated dates. Seasonal and operational details are reviewed regularly; where information changes frequently we say “check before travel” rather than presenting an old fact as permanent. If you spot an error, please tell us. We correct promptly and note significant changes.
Translations
We launch in English. Localised editions will only be published once written or reviewed by native-language editors.
