Luxury Diving Holidays

Walls, channels, wrecks and reef life, with the boats, guides and comfort that make repeated dives a pleasure.

Diving, then everything else

Dive deeper, stay better

The best luxury diving holidays combine exceptional underwater environments with the comfort and logistics that make repeated dives enjoyable. Compare reefs, walls, wrecks, marine life, visibility, water conditions, dive access and the quality of the stay, not just the name of the destination.

A great dive is only part of a great diving holiday. Boat time, operator quality, guide ratios and what you do between dives all shape the trip. That is why island destinations work so well: the water is close, the accommodation can be exceptional and the day revolves around the sea.

The best luxury dive destinations

Destinations our editors rate as exceptional for diving. Each guide covers signature sites, marine life, experience level and season.

Choose the encounter, then the destination

Visibility and water temperature

Think beyond visibility

Visibility gets too much attention. Current, marine life, reef structure, water temperature, boat time and seasonal conditions can matter just as much. Plankton-rich water that lowers visibility is often what attracts manta rays and whale sharks.

Tropical or temperate

Indian Ocean, Pacific and Southeast Asian destinations offer warm tropical water year-round. Atlantic destinations (the Azores, Madeira, the Canaries and Portugal) are temperate, with wetsuits needed and the warmest water typically in late summer and early autumn. Check current temperatures with your operator rather than relying on averages.

How to dive in comfort

Luxury dive resorts and liveaboards

Resort diving

The best dive resort is not automatically the most expensive. Look for a strong dive centre, good boat logistics, appropriate guide-to-guest ratios and access to the sites that match your interests, plus room to stop. Four dives a day sounds exciting until day three.

Liveaboards

For remote, protected reefs, a liveaboard is often the only way in: Tubbataha in the Philippines, Cocos Island off Costa Rica, Revillagigedo off Mexico, the outer atolls of the Maldives. Expect more dives and less space.

Best seasons

Typical windows from our seasonal matrix. Diving is possible year-round in many destinations; these are months when conditions are often favourable.

Diving holiday questions

What is the best luxury diving destination?

For reef diversity and premium island stays, destinations such as the Maldives, French Polynesia, Fiji, the Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean can be compelling. Conditions and operator quality should be checked for the specific trip.

Is a liveaboard or a resort better for a luxury dive holiday?

A liveaboard maximises dives and reaches remote sites such as Tubbataha or Cocos Island. A resort offers more space, privacy and non-dive activities. Many travellers prefer a resort with a strong dive centre and good boat logistics.

Are marine-life encounters guaranteed?

No. Encounters depend on season, location, conditions and luck. Choose operators who follow local regulations and keep a respectful distance from wildlife.

How should I choose a dive operator?

Look for qualified staff, appropriate safety procedures, well-maintained equipment, sensible guide-to-diver ratios and clear communication about conditions and local rules.
